Did you know that from April 2026, sole traders and partnerships with annual income over £50,000 will be required to follow the rules of Making Tax Digital (MTD)?
This means they’ll need to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC using MTD-compatible software, instead of filing a traditional Self Assessment tax return. The aim of MTD is to make the tax system more efficient, accurate, and easier for taxpayers to manage. Those earning over £30,000 but under £50,000 will follow in April 2027, while individuals earning below £30,000 are not yet required to join the scheme — although this may change in the future. Getting familiar with MTD software early can help make the transition smoother and ensure compliance when the new rules come into force.
